Extraordinary wine & beer shops in London

Updated: Aug 4, 2023

This post is dedicated to providing a glimpse into the exciting and trendy world of unique wines and beers that have made their mark on the London scene.

With hope for summer's return, it's the perfect time to start planning ahead and find special drinks to bring along to upcoming BBQs or picnics in the park.

In recent years, a wave of innovative and unconventional wines has taken over the market. Sparkling, unfiltered, orange, and various other unique wine varieties have become the talk of the town. Therefore, it's essential for all of us to broaden our horizons and immerse ourselves in this new and captivating world of wines and beers.

Despite coming from a country of wine producers with an extensive offering of grape varieties, trying these unconventional tastes has been a fantastic journey of discovery.

As I think about future events with friends involving wine and beers, I'm already thinking something unique to bring along that they'll appreciate an. And it's worth mentioning how English sparkling wines have joined the party, and are now fighting head-to-head with Cava, Prosecco, and even challenging champagne to certain extent. However, finding good dealerships for these new and trendy wines can be time-consuming and certainly costly.

Equally, the beer world has witnessed a similar transformation and considering Britain's rich history of beer-drinking, the UK shops now offer a comprehensive selection of modern beers, making it an exciting new world to explore.

I've been on this journey for the past few years, and I'm excited to share some of my favourite and local shops, where you can find rare and amazing products, unique varieties, and places where you can enjoy proper tastings.

Fantastic boutique wine shops in North/East London

This award-winning wine shop, bar and restaurant has truly mastered the art of France. They offer a delightful selection of French wines, champagnes, and boutique products, accompanied by delicious French cuisine.

Having had the luck of living around the corner, over the years, I've seen this place evolve from a small boutique shop in 2018 to become a beloved French institution in North London.

What makes this place special is their impressive range of French wines and champagnes, as well as their friendly and knowledgeable staff who treat customers like friends. They always go the extra mile to help you find what you're looking for and beyond. But it doesn’t stop there, because Authentique has a series of seasonal wine club events, currently exploring Provence & Corsica, where you can join a wine tasting or even entire dinner experiences.

Exciting news await me with the upcoming opening of a new branch in Finsbury Park, I cannot wait to have them as neighbours once again.

In summary, this place offers an inviting French experience with an excellent selection of wines and food, friendly staff, and enjoyable events. I'm looking forward to visiting their new location soon.

This is another must-visit award-winning wine shop. They offer a premium selection of high-end drinks, including an extensive variety of wines from around the world, unique beers, and locally sourced spirits. One of their standout features is the summer tasting sessions, where you have the exciting opportunity to "meet the producers." These events are in high demand, so booking early is recommended to secure your spot before they sell out.

Another unique 'feature' about this shop is the staff's personalized recommendations.

Each staff member provides their own suggestions, which are labelled accordingly next to their preferred wines. It's a nice touch that helps you know exactly who to thank or blame for your wine or beer selection next time.

Overall, Highbury Vintners is a welcoming place for wine and beer enthusiasts seeking quality products.

Pure Wines - London Fields

This wine shop is the place to go for those seeking unique and contemporary wines. They take pride in being importers, retailers, and distributors of natural wines, offering a diverse selection of rosés, whites, reds, orange wine, biodynamic, and certified organic options, among others. Their mission is crystal clear: they are committed to sourcing, promoting, and supplying natural wine, aiming to restore the true essence of wine as a natural product.

A visit to this shop guarantees an educational experience about natural wines. Whether you're an expert or a simple wine lover, you'll undoubtedly leave with a deeper understanding and appreciation for the world of these types of wines.

The Sampler - Islington

This shop is much more than just your regular wine shop. It offers a unique and enjoyable on-the-spot tasting experience, along with the opportunity to join their club and attend wine events.

According to them, you can try up to 80 different wines at the press of a button. I don't know how many I tried last time but definitely they had lots to choose from.

This self-managed tasting approach is not only fun but also convenient. All you need is a top-up card that you can use around the wine fridges until you run out of credit.

What makes The Sampler special too is their unusual BYO (Bring Your Own) food policy. Despite not having their own kitchen, they allow customers to bring their own food. This is an uncommon but fantastic idea, making it a great place to enjoy both the wines and your preferred snacks.

Overall, The Sampler is a great spot for wine enthusiasts and it's definitely worth a visit to explore their diverse wine selection and have some fun with their unique tasting method.

Provisions - Holloway

This shop offers a great package of wine, cheese, and artisan products primarily sourced from Italy, France, and other parts of Europe. Their selection is carefully curated, focusing on small and organic producers to offer affordable options to the audience in North London. Recently, they have expanded and opened a second shop in Hackney.

Whether you're a wine lover, a cheese connoisseur, or simply enjoy artisanal products, this shop has something special to offer. A visit to either of their locations will surely be an enjoyable experience.

Made in little France - Stoke Newington

This family-run business is entirely devoted to French wines and craft beers, who have been importing wine directly from local French producers for decades. They've built strong bonds with these wine artisans, making sure that every sip you take is a genuine taste of France right here in London.

And guess what? They've got not just one, but two other shops in Clerkenwell and Notting Hill. So, no matter where you're hanging out in the city, you can easily get your hands on some French goodness.

If you're a fan of French wines or love exploring craft beers, this place is a hidden gem you won't want to miss.

The Little Wine Shop - Stoke Newington

This is the true definition of a boutique wine shop and hidden gem, they even don't have a Website. But don't be fooled, instead, what they offer are off-the-shelf products, carefully selected to ensure every customer finds something special. If you're on the hunt for rare wines, this is a must-visit shop.

Almost a year ago this shop opened its door being the only wine shop in London (that I know of) dedicated to bringing the best wines from California and Oregon.

If you fancy exploring what American wines from the West Coast are all about, then Pacific Wines should be on your list.

On the beer topic, I can't help but share three fantastic shops where you can find some of the best beers and even a great selection of wines.

Clapton Craft - Kentish Town

This is my favourite booze shop in London, period. This established and renowned shop has been delivering fantastic craft beer over the years and with time, venturing into the world of natural wines and spirits, as well as a bit of merch. They were the pioneers in the world of craft and trendy beers and despite having 8 shops across London (most of them East), they have managed to hold on to their essence.

One of the shop's special features is the option to buy beer straight from the tap in two different formats: bottles of 1 litre or growlers of 1.89 litres. Additionally, for those planning events, they offer keg rentals, making it a convenient choice for gatherings and parties.

Whether you're a beer enthusiast or exploring the world of natural wines, this shop is your next must-visit.

Caps and Taps - Tufnell Park

This is a newly opened gem, proudly calling itself an 'off licence.' Here, you'll discover an impressive selection of craft beers, ciders, and natural wines, offering a wide variety of choices to suit everyone's taste.

Indiebeer - Holloway

This a haven for beer enthusiasts. This shop / taproom offers a delightful selection of quality craft beer and natural wine, all sourced from independent producers.

Whether you're looking to take some bottles home or enjoy a lively drinking experience on-site, Indiebeer has you covered.

I hope the fantastic choices above give you enough ideas for your next wine and beer purchase - cheers!
