Embracing Autumn: Comfort Food, Cosy Gatherings and Hygge Vibes

Comfort food for Autumn

For me, this time of year is all about embracing cosiness, something perfectly captured by the Danish concept of Hygge. It’s about warmth, soft lighting, intimate indoor gatherings, and of course, comfort food. As autumn arrives, I think of hearty stews, warming bakes, and rich soups made with the season’s vegetables. There’s something special about cooking with fresh, seasonal produce – it’s an easy way to bring out the best flavours in any dish, allowing the ingredients to speak for themselves.

At home, I take great pleasure in preparing these meals, particularly for cosy dinner parties. Picture this: comfort food on the table, a glass of wine in hand, and the company of good friends. The early nights of autumn invite long, leisurely evenings where you can savour the food and the conversation until you glance at the clock and realise how late it’s gotten – but it’s always worth it.

Autumn really does bring out the best in earthy, comforting flavours. Pumpkins, leeks, potatoes, and cauliflower, when paired with slow-cooked meats, create dishes that are both hearty and memorable. Cooking with seasonal, sustainable ingredients is not only about flavour, it’s about making choices that benefit both our health and the environment.

In our household, we do our best to avoid pre-packaged foods, focusing instead on seasonal produce and supporting local farmers and suppliers. It may be more expensive, but the quality of the ingredients, the depth of the flavours, and the positive impact on both our health and supporting local producers make it more than worthwhile.

When I don’t feel like cooking, there are a few places that perfectly capture that comforting, earthy essence I crave. Here’s a quick list of some of my favourite autumn dishes that reflect the season’s flavours.

  • Shepherd's Pie

This is one of my favourite dishes - rich, hearty, and indulgent, yet so simple to make. Even though it’s not quite like my own recipe, one of the best versions I’ve had was at The Hero, a gastropub that really nailed the flavours. You can read my full review here.

  • Pies

By the time October arrives, I’m always tempted to make a mushroom and leek pie, especially when leeks are at their best. If you're eating out, The Pie Room offers an upscale option, while trendy Willy’s Pies is a down-to-earth and on the go choice. For a great pub grub, The Londesborough in North / East London makes a wonderful mushroom and leek pie.

  • Risotto (mushroom)

October also marks wild mushroom season, and nothing says autumn like a rich, creamy mushroom risotto. It’s one of my favourite indulgent dishes, though I haven’t found a spot in North or East London that really hits the mark. Until then, my homemade version will have to do. Here's a fantastic recipe for preparing a delicious mushroom risotto.

  • Carbonara or earthy Ragu

When I need something that’s guaranteed to make me happy, I turn to a good carbonara or a rich ragu. Few places in London do them justice, but Casa Tua serves these Italian classics with no fuss, in a cosy, unpretentious setting that always feels like home.

  • Curry

I could easily eat curry every day, especially Thai curry. For me, Thai cuisine is unmatched when it comes to curries (apologies to Indian curries). In London, two places stand out: Farang with its superb beef shin curry, and Hoppers with their delicious lamb kari.

  • Ramen

Few things are as comforting as a steaming bowl of ramen. I’ve written a dedicated post to celebrate my love for this Japanese dish. If you’re looking for a place that consistently delivers, whether you’re dining in or ordering for delivery, Kanada-Ya never disappoints. You can read more about my favourite ramen spots in London here.

As the days get shorter and the air cooler, autumn is the perfect time to enjoy some warmth and comfort. Whether you’re cooking at home or trying out local favourites, this season is all about good food and cosy moments. So here’s to autumn - cheers to the months ahead 🍁🍻
