Peruvian cuisine is easily one of my top three favourites. This isn’t just because of its growing reputation, with Central in Lima recently named the world’s number one restaurant. I’ve been a fan of Peruvian food for years, and it’s easy to understand why. Its mix of rich, earthy flavours, fresh seafood, and subtle Asian influences makes it one of the most varied and satisfying cuisines I’ve ever tried.
Earlier this year, I visited Peru, and it was an incredible experience. I got to try classics like ceviche and lomo saltado, along with traditional dishes from the Sacred Valley and some fusion creations. The trip exceeded my expectations and confirmed why this cuisine is so special. If you haven’t explored Peruvian food yet, it’s well worth trying. You can read more about it in a blog post I wrote earlier this year, where I pay tribute to Peruvian food and share some of my favourite Peruvian restaurants in North and East London.
This brings me to the restaurant of the week: Mr LoBo. In its relatively short existence, this spot has made a name for itself by keeping the essence of Peruvian cuisine while presenting it in a more modern, tapas-style format. If you’re after a traditional Peruvian feast with generous portions and a full-on "criolla" experience, this may not be the spot for you. But for a fresh and modern take on Peruvian dishes, it’s absolutely perfect.
For me, Mr LoBo is my go-to place when I’m in the mood for Peruvian food. The Google reviews back this up, nearly two years of top ratings say a lot. Much of this success can be credited to its charming owners, who are always on hand to ensure every guest has an exceptional experience. The cocktails are fantastic, and the dishes offer creative spins on Peruvian classics. Whether you’re on a date or catching up with friends, it’s a relaxed spot right in the heart of Upper Street.
As for my favourites? I always go for the ceviche, tiradito de salmón, and lomo saltado. It’s a combination that never lets me down.
If you haven’t been yet, I’d recommend giving Mr LoBo a try. It’s a great place for a laid-back introduction to modern Peruvian flavours paired with great Pisco inspired cocktails.
